Valentines Day at Deep Run Elementary
Deep Run will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14th. Students will be given the opportunity to exchange Valentines with their classmates and enjoy a small treat.
The treat will include water, a store bought cookie, orange, pretzel, and fruit snack. Please inform your child’s teacher if your child can’t have one of the items. If your child has allergies, you are welcome to send in an alternative snack for your child.
Please remember, if your child decides to exchange Valentines, he/she needs to include all the students in the homeroom class. Class lists were sent home in Wednesday folders.
Although Valentines may include candy, please do not send in bags of candy or other snacks not listed above—they will not be served to the students.
Grab and Go Breakfast Coming to Deep Run on February 20th
Thanks to a grant from Share Our Strength, we will now have a breakfast kiosk in the front lobby available to students so they can "Grab and Go" on their way to class. The traditional cafeteria style breakfast will still be available in the cafeteria each morning. The Grab and Go breakfast will be available at the same cost to students as the breakfast in the cafeteria and can be purchased with funds on their account or with cash. Full price breakfast is $2.

PTA is sponsoring a Deep Run evening at Launch (trampoline center) on February 22 from 4-8. Admission is $16 and the PTA will receive 25% of the proceeds. See the attached flyer. This flyer will go home in next week's Wednesday folders.

Change Matters to help Grassroots
Change Matters is an approved Howard County Public School System program that teaches children about homelessness in Howard County, the services Grassroots provides, and
philanthropy. Grassroots is Howard County’s only 24-hour homeless shelter and crisis intervention center. Your child(ren) will be asked to share with you information learned about Change Matters and
ask permission to donate small change/coins. There will be a Change Matters collection jar for each grade.
The small change collected will go directly to Grassroots to provide the essential services needed to help the children and families that are homeless here in our community. Last year, there were more than 600 homeless children attending 75 schools in Howard County. Deep Run Elementary School is excited to help Grassroots make a difference!
If you are able to donate, please send the change in your child’s lunch bag or backpack during this campaign week through February 14, 2018.
If you need more information about Grassroots, please visit our website: www.grassrootscrisis.org
Cozy Night of Reading February 15

International Night Coming to DRES: Families Needed
Deep Run Elementary School will celebrate its cultural and ethnic diversity at International Night on Friday, April 20 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM with a fun family night featuring table-top country displays, international food, games, crafts and entertainment from various cultures.
Families are needed to share their cultural heritage by preparing a traditional food, bringing in everyday items from other countries, such as dishes, clothing, art, flags, maps and pictures.
Deep Run students who participate in cultural arts of other countries are invited to perform at an arts showcase. If your child is studying traditional music, dance or other arts, please ask the instructor to consider having the entire class perform, as well.
To sign up, return the attached forms to school by February 23, 2018 to help the committee to plan the event.

Flu Season is Here!
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/updated/fluguideforparents.pdf
We are seeing an increase in fever and flu like symptoms in the Deep Run health room. Here are some facts about the flu:
• Symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, cough, and sore throat. If your child has a fever they must STAY HOME. Your child must be fever free (<100*F) for 24 hours WITHOUT fever reducing medication before coming to school.
• The flu virus spreads through droplets from a person coughing and/or sneezing. Continue to encourage children to cover their coughs and sneezes.
• The flu can spread from 1 day before symptoms start and last as long as 7 days after a person becomes symptomatic.
• Get vaccinated!! The flu shot helps prevent and reduce the flu illness.
The above link has more great information about the flu. Please read and feel free to call the health room if you have any questions (410-313-5051).
