A Note From PTA About Trunk or Treat
A big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who took time to make amazing creative trunks. Thank you to all the families and businesses like Wegman's and Weis who donated candy! This night wouldn't be possible without you! You all made Trunk or Treat so much fun for our students at Deep Run.
The PTA would love to give a ginormous shout out to Jessica for organizing our Trunk or Treat event. She made sure everything went smoothly. She also made those cute monsters who helped collect the candy for this event.
For all those who are wondering, our favorite trunks for the night are...
1st place- The Salas family who created the Disney trunk
2nd place- The Branch family who created the Pirate trunk
3rd place-the Brayram family who created the Spooky Halloween trunk
Save the Date: Coffee and Conversation with Administrators
Join Mrs. Lancaster, Mrs. Quirk, and Mrs. Townsend for a Coffee and Conversation on November 14th at 9:30 in the cafeteria. This is a great way to start American Education Week.

Parent teacher conferences will be held on November 21st and 22nd. Reading teachers will offer in-person conferences on the 21st and virtual on the 22nd. Most teachers will offer evening conferences on the 21st and 22nd. Teachers who do not offer evening conferences, will offer virtual conferences on the 23rd. School will dismiss at 12:55 on the 21st and 22nd. Schools are closed on November 23rd. Parents will be able to sign up for conferences starting on November 7th. Directions will be shared in next week's Digest.
Inclement Weather Asynchronous Learning Days
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) now allows local school systems to repurpose inclement weather days as asynchronous school days. At the discretion of the superintendent, HCPSS will use up to three inclement weather asynchronous days during the 2022-2023 school year. One of two additional codes will be instituted to reflect the decision to transition to an asynchronous instruction day:
Code Purple Asynchronous Student Day - School buildings and Office buildings open for staff only
Code Pink Asynchronous Student Day - School buildings and Office buildings closed
For each asynchronous inclement weather day, students should:
Access the inclement weather asynchronous task options chart via the HCPSS Inclement Weather Asynchronous Instruction Plan website or the hard copy that was sent home to families upon request. K-5 students should complete one task per curriculum area:
1 Math
1 ELA
1 Content (either Science, Social Studies, or Health)
1 Related Arts task for that color day
Circle the completed tasks on a hard copy of the task choices chart or make a list of completed tasks on a separate piece of paper.
Submit the printed chart or the completed tasks list on separate paper to their teacher at the end of the month to get marked as present for the asynchronous day attendance. NOTE: For asynchronous days occurring less than nine days before the end of the month, task completion lists will be collected at the end of the next month. Attendance for asynchronous days will be updated monthly.

HCPSS Redistricting for 22-23 with Information Specific for Deep Run Families
On October 13th the Board of Education held a work session related to the redistricting process to open New High School #13. At the meeting the Board voted to continue considering the Superintendent's Recommendation as the preliminary plan. This preliminary plan does not include any changes to the assigned high school for Deep Run families. Most students attend Long Reach HS and a small number of students living very close to Deep Run ES go to Oakland Mills HS. This preliminary plan has no changes for the middle school Deep Run students would attend. There will be no redistricting of elementary schools. At this time there is no guarantee this is the plan that will be adopted. The Board of Education's vote is currently planned for November 17th.
The Feasibility Study conducted earlier this year presented four scenario plans. It should be noted that some of the scenarios included changes in high school for Deep Run ES families. Scenario A has Deep Run students going to Oakland Mills HS, Long Reach HS and Hammond HS. Scenario B has all Deep Run students going to Long Reach High School. Scenario C increases the number of students going to Oakland Mills HS and keeping some students at Long Reach HS. Scenario D keeps the high schools for Deep Run students as they are now.
More information about redistricting can be found on the HCPSS Website. Questions can be sent to school_planning@hcpss.org.
