Candy for the Courageous

Did your children get too much candy while Trick or Treating?  Encourage them to donate some of their candy to our troops overseas. The USO collects candy and encouraging notes at this time of year through Candy for the Courageous.  There will be collection bins in our Student Services Suite (where our counselors offices are locate). Thank you!

Deep Run PTA Updates

PTA Meeting
Please join us at our November 19th meeting for a presentation by Assistant Principal Sophia Quirk. Learn about standardized testing at DRES, what tests are administered, understanding the results, how the test data is used at school, and additional information. Bring your questions!  Join us in the Media Center at 7PM on Nov 19th. We will have a brief PTA business update on PTA activities before the presentation. A Spanish interpreter will be present.

Deep Run Dash
Don't forget to support your school through the Deep Run Dash! Funds go to support cultural arts, STEM, staff appreciation, family events throughout the year, and more. The students ran last week and had a blast!  Donation pledges are due by Friday November 1st. Pledge sheets can be turned in until Nov 1st to students' homeroom teachers. Title I Learning Series:  Supporting Your Child in Making and Keeping Good Friends

November 4th at 2:30

Learn and share strategies to facilitate positive peer relationships for your child. We will discuss what positive play and communication looks like at different developmental stages and provide strategies to teach children how to be a good friend, manage conflict, and initiate new friendships. This is a fun, interactive seminar. Parents will leave with play-date starters for home and community.

School Attendance for Academic Success

Research is clear that showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic and social success starting from kindergarten and continuing through high school.

Thrive By Five Conference

Thrive by Five Conference is coming! This conference is for families with children birth to 5 years old and will be held at the North Laurel Community Center on November 16th from 8:00am to 1:00pm.

  • There will be break-out sessions on nutrition, wellness, music.
  • One break-out session is in Spanish.
  • This event is free, but there is limited space, so please register at thrivebyfivehoward2019.eventbrite.com.
  • There is also limited childcare available for children 2 yrs old and over by calling the number on the flier (410-313-1442).
  • Translation services can also be requested.

Guiding Good Choices Prevention Program

This is an evidence-based, interactive prevention program that provides the families of children ages 9-14 with skills and knowledge to reduce the risk that their children will use drugs.  This program is sponsored through HC DrugFree. It will be held at Wilde Lake Middle School on Tuesday, October 22 & 29 and November 5 & 12, 2019. See flier for additional information.

Being a Reader and Being a Writer--New Programs

This year, all elementary schools have implemented two new literacy programs, Being a Reader and Being a Writer.
