Second Materials Distribution on November 11th
Deep Run Elementary is pleased to announce the second materials distribution on Wednesday, November 11th. Thanks to Title I funding, we have prepared bags for students with white boards, dry erase markers, erasers, folder of learning resources for ELA and Math, and several math manipulatives. We even have magnetic letters for our youngest students. Come to school on November 11th to pick up the materials for your child. We will follow a similar process as our first distribution. Details will be sent early next week.
End of the First Quarter--We did it!
This has been a challenging 1st quarter of school for many of our families. You worked hard and persevered! Thank you for all your support. Due to the negative impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and transition to virtual learning, the Howard County Public School System has made some changes to 1st quarter grading that you may see reflected on your child’s report card.
Students in primary grades will earn an I (Independent) or W (With assistance) if they have engaged in synchronous instruction. Students in intermediate grades will receive A, B or C grades if they have engaged in synchronous instruction. As a result, Canvas grades may not align with quarter 1 report card grades.
These changes are in place for 1st quarter report card grades only. Asynchronous assignments complement and support synchronous learning, please support your child with task completion and with attending support sessions as needed in the second quarter.
Sign up for Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences--Begins November 13th
Fall Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 23 - 25th. November 23rd and 24th are half days for students and conferences will take place in the afternoon. Many teachers will also host conferences on the evenings of the 23rd and 24th. Teachers who do not host evening conferences will offer conferences on the 25th. There is no school for students on the 25th.
This fall, you may sign up for a conference with your child's ELA teacher. The conference window opens up on Wednesday, November 13th and will be open through Thursday, November 19th. The conferences will be 20 minutes each. Some non-homeroom teachers may have office hours or conferences available for the parents/guardians of the students they work with. More information will come from those individuals to the impacted families via Canvas within the next week or so.
To sign up for a conference, please login to HCPSS Connect and click on "Conferences" in the navigation pane. Refer to the Quick Reference Guide for more information and detailed steps to sign up for a conference.
The Related Arts team is pleased to announce that they will be hosting "office hours" during our fall conference window. The office hours will be provided for parents/guardians of students in grades K - 5 to meet with a child's Related Arts teacher if they have any questions about assignments or expectations. If you desire the opportunity to meet with one or more of your child's Related Arts teacher, please reach out to them via email to set up a mutually convenient time to meet during the conference window. For the list of Related Arts teachers and their email addresses, please visit our Staff Page on the DRES Website.
If you have any additional questions about conferences, please feel free to reach out to the administrative team via email or contact the school, 410-313-5000.

Residency
Residency Reminder: Even though HCPSS is currently operating in a virtual learning environment, families need to alert their school if they move, especially if they move to another attendance area. While in the spring transfers between schools were minimized, it is now the 2020-2021 school year and all students should be enrolled at the school for their assigned attendance area. Please let an administrator know if you believe a student has moved but is continuing to attend your google meets.
Google Play--Parent Permission Required
In an effort to continue expanding our authorized set of digital tools for virtual instruction, HCPSS has curated a new set of supplemental digital tools that are available only through Google’s menu of additional services. These supplemental digital tools are approved by HCPSS and comply with federal, state and Howard County Board of Education student data privacy policies. Due to Google’s settings, students must access this set of tools by utilizing Google’s menu of additional services, which requires consent by a parent or guardian.
