Dress Code
Please help your child come to school prepared for learning. HCPSS Policy 9210 provides information about the dress code in all Howard County Schools. Please review the policy here. Here are a couple of highlights:
We encourage students to wear sneakers to school. They are the safest shoe for PE and for recess.
We are seeing an increase in spinner and popper toys being brought to school. These items should be kept at home or in your child's backpack during the school day.
Chromebooks
Students in PreK, K, and 1st grades should return their Chromebook to school, if they had one given to them last year.
Students in Grades 2-5 who bring Chromebooks back and forth to school are expected to bring the devices fully charged every day. Find information about how to care for and safely transport student Chromebooks. Complete information about technology and devices is provided online.
State of Maryland Assessments for Fall 2021
As part of continued COVID-19 recovery efforts, the Maryland State Department of Education is conducting an early fall student assessment.
The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) is the overarching term used for all state assessments. MSDE will administer assessments in the Early Fall for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA/L), Mathematics, and Science (Maryland Integrated Science Assessment- MISA), as well as the Alternate Assessments in ELA, Mathematics and Science, and the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA).
See the attached MSDE flyer for more information and a general testing schedule.

Complete the Family File Now
HCPSS Family File is where parents input and find all of the information located on their child's Emergency Procedure Cards, contact information and medical considerations. For the safety of your child/children, it is very important that this information remains current. This information must be updated every year. Please ensure that it is completed prior to the start of school. Once logged in, parents/guardians will be asked to verify or update the following information: Student Information, Parent/Guardian Contact, Emergency Contact, Medical Information, Arrival/Dismissal Procedures, Photo Approval, Data Confidentiality, and PTA/PTSA Directory.
Please read these Family File directions to begin. To update your Family File, go to https://www.hcpss.org/connect/.
Parents who may have forgotten their log-in credentials can request assistance using the help link in the HCPSS Connect page. If you need help, click here. Please revise and/or complete your family contact information as soon as possible. We appreciate your efforts to complete this important task right away.
Important Reminders for the 21-22 School Year
Covid-19 Self Screenings
All parents/guardians are to perform a COVID-19 health check every day before your student leaves home. Students are not to come to school if they are experiencing any symptom(s) associated with COVID-19 or other communicable disease.
Students in Prekindergarten, K and 1st
Students in PreK, K, and 1st grade should return any Chromebooks they used last school year. Please bring the Chromebook and charger to school.
Student/Parent Handbook
The 2021-2022 Student and Parent Handbook is now available on the HCPSS website. This resource is helpful for navigating the school year and includes information about HCPSS practices, policies and services available to support and enrich learning. A printed version of the handbook is no longer provided.
